The reserve obtained Governmental approval for the construction of an airstrip, taxiway and parking area
then contacted Soil Solutions to provide a solution to protect and preserve the surfaces once constructed
from erosion, loss of material from heavy storm water runoff, cracking and pothole formation using a method
to provide an easily maintainable surface which blends in with the surrounding environment and be safe for
the ora, fauna and wildlife present on the reserve. Repairs were performed to correct the imperfections in the
surface, all oversized particles were removed, the surface was compacted and EBS was applied as a surface
seal using several coats over the airstrip, taxiway and parking area. Sealing the airstrip with EBS provided a
surface, which is protected from erosion and extreme weather conditions, blends in with the reserve
environment, provides a smooth dust free surface for aircraft landings that is safe for all visitors to the reserve
including the large amount of wildlife prevalent within the reserve.

The airstrip was widened and lengthened using a mix of laterite and rocky gravel to a total length of 1.7
kilometers by a width of 36 meters. Once the expansion of the airstrip was complete it was used for
approximately two (2) years without any sealing of the surface. After using the airstrip during this time it was
determined that an EBS surface seal would be required as the loose gravel on the surface was causing poor
landing and takeoff conditions, creating excessive dust, contributing to unnecessary wear and tear to the
aircraft tyres and causing damage to the aircraft during prop wash. The surface was lightly skimmed using a
grader to remove any imperfections and all oversized particles, the surface was compacted and EBS was
applied as a surface seal using several coats over the airstrip and taxiway providing an all weather dust free
airstrip surface that is now preserved and protected from erosion and degradation (including, cracks,
corrugation, and material loss), with improved skid resistance, better pilot visibility, allows for improved aircraft
acceleration, greatly reduces aircraft damage and is easily maintained.
