The construction of the Limpopo-Lipadi runway by Soil Solutions directly aligns with the reserve’s vision of conservation, community, and providing unique experiences in Southern Africa’s wilderness. Built in 2014 and still in excellent condition as of 2024, the runway has played a pivotal role in enhancing accessibility while blending seamlessly with the natural environment.
The project reflects Limpopo-Lipadi’s commitment to sustainable practices. The durable, dust-free, and erosion-resistant runway minimizes environmental impact and ensures safety for both aircraft and wildlife. Frequent wildlife visits during construction and the continued use of the runway by animals highlight its harmony with the reserve’s biodiversity.
This infrastructure supports Limpopo-Lipadi’s conservation and research efforts, enabling better access for researchers, National Geographic training teams, and wildlife journalists documenting critical habitats. Additionally, it facilitates tourism, a key component of the reserve’s economic and conservation strategy, by offering a reliable entry point for visitors and stakeholders.
By integrating the runway into the reserve’s pristine environment, Soil Solutions has contributed to Limpopo-Lipadi’s broader goal of balancing human activity with the conservation of its remarkable natural and cultural heritage. This project exemplifies how infrastructure can be both functional and environmentally conscious, reinforcing the reserve’s dedication to being a premier wildlife and wilderness destination.
The runway, taxiway and parking area were constructed using in-situ material from a borrow pit created on site, material was placed and distributed evenly and compacted, the surface was contoured and shaped to allow for drainage, final shaping and compaction was completed and then the EBS surface seal was applied providing a durable, all-weather surface that is sealed and resistant to erosion, fine material loss, cracking, and pothole formation. It eliminates dust, enhances safety, ensures visible FOD, improves skid resistance, reduces rolling resistance, provides excellent visibility during approach, and enhances aircraft acceleration—all while protecting aircraft from damage. With significantly reduced environmental impact, this solution eliminates the need for regular grading, minimizes equipment use, lowers diesel consumption, and reduces CO2 emissions and dust, making it a win for both operational efficiency and the
environment.
